The Namibian government has reaffirmed its commitment to respond to immediate socio-economic needs and make long-term investments in building a skilled, self-reliant, and resilient generation.
Part of these efforts is the allocation of N$257 million for the establishment of a National Youth Fund.
An affirmation of long-term investment in young people was made by Vice President Lucia Witbooi at the opening ceremony of the 6th National Youth Service intake at the training centre in Henties Bay.
"This landmark initiative is designed to support youth-led entrepreneurship, start-up ventures and graduate internship programmes. It is therefore essential that graduates of the National Youth Service are strategically positioned to take full advantage of these opportunities, particularly those who have completed the Service Skills Training Programme. These young men and women form a critical part of our emerging skilled workforce and exemplify the empowered youth the Government seeks to uplift through such targeted interventions."
She called on all organisations, ministries, and agencies to provide voluntary service opportunities to the National Youth Service when they are requested to do so.
"Such partnerships are vital in establishing structured and impactful avenues for voluntary service platforms through which recruits can gain hands-on experience, contribute meaningfully to national development efforts and apply the practical skills, knowledge, and core values instilled during their training. It is only through this collective effort that we can ensure the seamless integration of our youth into the broader socio-economic fabric of our nation."
The National Service Training Programme has been extended to seven months from the previous six months.
This revised structure includes an additional one-month compulsory voluntary service, aimed at ensuring that all recruits are actively engaged in tasks of national importance.
The training programme has been enhanced through the support of guest instructors from the Zambia National Service.
