Governor of the Otjozondjupa Region, John ||Khamuseb, paid a visit to residents of the Okahandja informal settlement, who raised their concerns with him regarding land allocation and service delivery.
||Khamuseb offered the residents a platform to raise their concerns, stating that he has heard their pleas.
Some complained about a lack of police presence, stating that crime has become a regular occurrence.
The governor informed residents that issues, such as poor police presence and neglected healthcare, should be directed to the relevant ministries, as these services do not fall under the municipality.
The residents also voiced concerns about the housing situation.
Residents say they are being relocated from areas where they have already constructed brick houses, citing that the elderly, who are already retired, could not be expected to build new houses.
Others say they have two numbers on a single erven and are now required to pay double for municipal services.
Others questioned why the municipality had previously returned money to the treasury while failing to address their demands, which included unresolved land and water issues.
The residents also expressed their disappointment with the municipality for not being present during their engagement with the governor.
This, the residents said, was testament to the local authority's lack of concern for their well-being or for the development of the informal settlements.
The governor promised to take the matter up with the relevant authorities and would respond to the demonstrators within the next two weeks.
