The first phase of the construction of the Nkurenkuru Multipurpose Youth Resource Centre, which started in June last year, has been completed.
An amount of N$10 million was allocated for Phase 1A of the centre, which covered the feasibility studies, design, documentation, and layout.
Kornelius Luka, Centre Manager at the Rundu Vocational Training Centre (RVTC), explained what is included in the youth centre.
"This practical ground now consists of a soccer field platform, a basketball court, a netball court and the other one there, and a volleyball court. On top of that one, then, we now have the changing rooms, which are here where we are standing. That is the work which was given to us, and that is phase 1A."
Lukas revealed that ongoing issues with water pipeline connections beyond their control are impeding the project.
Phase 1B of the project, which focusses on establishing a sports complex foundation, will continue until 2027.
According to Kavango West Regional Youth Coordinator Agustinus Kupembona, the centre will provide a platform for youth to engage in positive activities, keeping them off the streets.
The region's lack of proper sports facilities has long been a challenge, forcing sports enthusiasts to improvise.
"If this centre comes true, it will help more young people get involved in positive activities. Starting with the training centres that are happening at different youth centres in other regions. We have seen a lot of big halls where young people can organise beauty pageants and other information-sharing platforms that can help them to pave the way with their lives, but here it's not happening. If this centre comes to reality, more young people will unpack their ideas to put them to use."
The Ministry of Youth is yet to announce the commencement of phase 1B.
