The renovation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Dialysis Centre at the Intermediate Hospital Rundu is back on track.

This comes after the Prime Minister, Elijah Ngurare, toured the hospital in September and enquired why the renovations had stopped.

Just a week after the Prime Minister's visit, the contractor came back on site.

The renovations were stalled for almost a year, and the contractor said it was due to a lack of funds.

When the NBC news team visited the site, workers were busy turning the old maternity ward into a seven-bed ICU.

The current ICU only accommodates four beds.

Another section, called High Care One and Two, will also accommodate seven beds, while the dialysis centre will have five beds.

The linen room and doctors' rooms, nurses' and doctors' stations, sluice rooms, waiting rooms and ablution facilities are just some of the many other sections included in the renovations.

Site Agent from Kunene River Construction and Electrical, Isaac Mafudza, says if all goes well, renovations are expected to be finalised between next month and December.

The medical superintendent at Intermediate Hospital Rundu, Dr Theresia Shivera, says the Prime Minister's visit definitely set the wheels in motion.

"It was good to see the team, the Prime Minister's team, coming and seeing it for themselves. I think that really makes a difference. It was also a good surprise. It was good for our staff members because we felt like we were finally being heard. Someone is finally listening, and a week later, seeing that unit, seeing that foreman back on site, that is really encouraging, and it gives us hope, so my plea then is just to say, 'Please do not disappoint us.'"

The Intermediate Hospital Rundu caters for both the Kavango West and Zambezi regions.

ICU space has always been a challenge, and patients who needed dialysis services were referred to private institutions.

The ICU and dialysis centre currently under renovation are therefore expected to lessen the pressure on the usually inundated hospital.

Once renovations are done, about 33 medical staff members will be needed to work here.
