The Rundu Intermediate Hospital is still faced with overcrowding, leading to congested corridors and long waiting times, compromising service delivery.

The hospital caters for patients from the Kavango East, Kavango West, and Zambezi regions, as well as neighbouring Angola.

The hospital's infrastructure needs refurbishment; it lacks essential medical equipment and staff.

Chief Medical Officer in the Kavango East Region, Dr. Jean Kabangu, said, "There are a number of facilities that we need to upgrade into health centres, and if we upgrade them into health centres, we are going to decongest the main hospital, and if they manage to build a new intermediate hospital up to standard, and this hospital is a district hospital, patients will be taken care of."

Dr. Kabangu explained that upgrading the Andara and Nyangana district hospitals will also reduce patient transfers to Rundu.

Constructing a new hospital at Divundu will also come in handy.

The Chief Regional Dentist, Elizabeth Hausiku-Elago, said the dental department is almost dysfunctional.

The deputy chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health, Emma Muteka, applauded the directorate for some of the improvements made to the hospital.

"However, pertaining to the seriousness of the recommendation, it also gives us the honour to summon the Minister or the Executive Director for them to really give us answers about some of the things that we may have found on the ground."

She assured the staff that follow-ups on their recommendations will be done.
