The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) is training police officers and party agents from the Kavango East Region ahead of the Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections.
The training focuses on preparing the police and party agents for their roles as well as polling procedures come voting day.
These include the general duties of election and counting agents, the responsibilities of the presiding officer on polling day, and the specific functions of polling station personnel, as well as the responsibilities of election agents.
The training will also introduce them to all the election material.
Returning Officer for the Rundu Urban Constituency, Frederick Rugharo, explained that "you are the eyes and ears of democracy at every polling station. Your cooperation and understanding of the rules will greatly improve the credibility, transparency, and fairness of the electoral process. I would like to remind everyone to participate effectively, listen carefully and ask questions where clarity is needed. Remember, well-informed officials and agents are the foundation of free and fair elections."
The Regional Electoral Officer in Kavango East, Paulus Sifire, said the training session marks a critical stage in the electoral process.
"Election agents, your role is to process and represent your parties, candidates, organisations or associations to observe the process and ensure fairness, not to interfere but to report and record any incidents as well. Police officers, you serve as custodians of order and security. Your duty is to maintain peace, protect the electoral materials, the officials, and the voters, and ensure the safety of all stakeholders without fear or favour. Your neutrality and discipline are what uphold public trust in the process."
