The Kalkrand Village Council handed over 16 houses to beneficiaries of the Build Together Programme in the village, after being dormant for 17 years.
The village council reintroduced the programme in 2023 after it secured funding of N$1.5 million from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development.
Speaking at the handing over, Kalkrand Village Council Chairperson Henelie ǂAuses said the last houses were built in 2008.
"We have taken it upon ourselves to dignify the lives of those family members and community members through the provision of low-income housing."
One of the beneficiaries, Hanna Stuurman, said, "Our dream was to own our house one day, but they made it possible for us today. I can say the dream of owning a house has come true. Thank you, Kalkrand village council and leadership."
Officiating at the ceremony, Hardap Regional Governor and former Rehoboth Rural Constituency Councillor Riaan McNab congratulated the village councillors for having reintroduced the programme.
"I was informed that the leadership of the Kalkrand local authority has framed and endorsed a blueprint, a roadmap that is coined the "smart growth economy strategy," which runs from 2024 to 2028, for achieving the dream of fully-fledged town status. The smart growth economy strategy outlined several key strategic sectors, such as housing, infrastructure, retail and wholesale, recreation and entertainment centres, health, urban agriculture, logistics, and warehousing, as pillars upon which the future development of the town will be cemented. Thank you for that blueprint."
The village also held a groundbreaking ceremony for the soon-to-be-constructed ablution facilities at the Kalkrand sport facilities, with support from the Hardap Regional Council.
