Oshana Police Commander Commissioner Naftal Sakaria stated that the investigation into the attack on a public prosecutor in Ondangwa on 17 October has established that the assault was directly linked to the prosecutor’s involvement in a high-profile criminal case.
Briefing the media on the latest developments, Commissioner Sakaria noted that the investigation has now reached an advanced stage.
The prosecutor was shot and doused with acid, and her vehicle windows were smashed.
According to Sakaria, the incident was allegedly orchestrated by Abner Mewiliko Kapilili, who was already in police custody when the plot was carried out.
CCTV footage and advanced investigative techniques assisted in tracing the suspects, leading to the recovery of crucial evidence, including clothing and cellphones.
Six suspects, among them a police officer, have been arrested and remain in custody on charges including attempted murder, conspiracy, corruption, possession of counterfeit currency, and drug-related offences. Police are also investigating three vehicles and two properties believed to be linked to the group.
Commissioner Sakaria expressed disappointment over the alleged involvement of Sergeant Shipanga Matheus, who is accused of unlawfully escorting an inmate to a guesthouse, emphasising that such conduct will not be tolerated in the force.
Sakaria added that more arrests are expected as the investigation expands and issued a stern warning ahead of the festive season, stating, "They can run, but they cannot hide because the police will apprehend them and put them behind bars."
