The Chairperson of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation's Board, Lazarus Jacobs, says the public broadcaster remains committed to providing the nation with verified and trustworthy election updates as events unfold.
Speaking during a discussion, Jacobs reminded the public that the national broadcaster is mandated to provide information that reflects and represents the values and aspirations of all Namibians, irrespective of their race, ethnicity, or social background.
"What we are trying to make sure is that each and every one of the constituencies and voters feels represented when it comes to radio and TV by the NBC because our primary client is a Namibian citizen."
He also stressed that the national broadcaster has a huge responsibility to ensure that it provides information that is factual, verified, and trustworthy instead of breaking unverified news.
"At the end of the day, even if we give a broadcasting a particular segment 10 min later, that's fine as long as we have ticked all the boxes and verified the information, and also, when information comes out about you as Ricardo or whoever, we should be able to go to Ricardo and say, 'We hear this; is it true?'"
Jacobs explained that as a non-profit entity, the NBC provides coverage of any event, regardless of the source, which sets it apart from commercial media entities.
"We are a public broadcaster; we are different. We are government-funded; our mission is to inform, educate, and entertain. We are not profit-driven or commercially successful, but we are driven by information success.
And the deployment of teams across all the regions in the Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections speaks to that mandate.
