Namibia has recorded 448 road fatalities from January to November. This is an increase from last year's 376 crashes, which are said to be caused mainly by speeding.

Speaking at an MVA Fund event, the public relations officer in the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Selma Mwaetako, said that despite having good road infrastructure in the SADC region, Namibia has the highest number of road accidents.

"The festive seasons are here, and despite having a country with beautiful roads, and mind you, Namibia is rated number one in Africa when it comes to the best roads. Surprisingly, South Africa is rated number 10. We, the only one in the southern region with the best road. But when it comes to accidents, we are the highest."

The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund covers everyone involved in a motor vehicle accident for medical attention, an injury grant, a loss of income, a funeral, and a loss of support.

Sam Amunkete, Senior Accident and Injury Prevention Officer at the MVA Fund, explained that "should an accident occur and you sustain injuries, the MVA covers you up to N$1.5 million. That is for injury management, rehabilitation, and life enhancement. Meaning from the time the accident comes, the ambulance to the hospital, if you have follow-ups, you have to go back to the doctor for follow-ups, you have to go for physio, you have to go to biokinetics, and the fund must pay for that. It comes from the N$1.5 million."

He stressed that the MVA Fund also builds houses for those who use wheelchairs as a result of the accident and have a piece of land.
