Some shack dwellers of Grunau Settlement in the ||Kharas Region have expressed joy as the long wait of becoming mortar and brick homeowners draws closer.

Some have been waiting for decent housing for 20 years.

The beneficiaries of ten houses being constructed under the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia housing programme are set to move into their new homes early next year.

An elated Johanna Plaatjies said, "After the long wait of 20 years, the Shack Dwellers Federation is finally constructing this small house for me. It is the result of years of saving ten and five cents at a time that brought me to this point. This initiative truly takes us from shacks to proper houses."

Another beneficiary is Edward Frederick; he shared how this programme would change their lives. "My wife is actually the beneficiary of the house, and I am just supporting her. But I am very glad of the prospect of moving into a decent house soon."

Initially, the houses' construction was scheduled to be completed before the end of this year.

But due to water issues that impacted the construction progress, the construction completion was rescheduled to February next year.
