The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) says initiatives such as the Mukorob project are critical to strengthening the country's film and television industry.
They also provide a platform for authentic Namibian storytelling.
Speaking during Film Week, NBC's Commissioning Editor, Glendyrr Bailey, said the initiative aims to support the creation of authentic stories that reflect the nation's identity and strengthen the backbone of Namibian cinema.
As a public broadcaster, Bailey said the NBC has a responsibility not only to inform and educate audiences but also to promote local talent and strengthen national identity.
She explained that the Mukorob initiative supports this mandate by aligning with NBC's audience needs, encouraging industry growth and ensuring productions meet the broadcaster's editorial standards.
Bailey added that the programme goes beyond commissioning content and is instead an investment in the future of Namibia's creative industry.
"Mukorob supports this responsibility by aligning with NBC's audio research and audience needs, fostering industry growth, ensuring that productions comply with NBC's editorial standards, and reflecting the diverse cultures, traditions, and communities of Namibia," said Bailey.
Film Week, she noted, provides an important platform to showcase local talent while strengthening collaboration between NBC and the local film industry.
The event also allows filmmakers, audiences, and industry stakeholders to engage directly and contribute to shaping Namibia's film sector's future.
Bailey, referencing the success of Nollywood, stated that the Nigerian film industry grew from humble beginnings with limited resources but a strong determination to tell local stories.
"When we look at successful film industries around the world, such as, as mentioned yesterday, the Nigerian film industry, we must remember that they did not become what they are overnight. What is now known globally as Nollywood started small, with passionate storytellers, limited resources, and a strong belief that their stories deserved to be told. They started somewhere."
Bailey added that initiatives like Mukorob are helping build skills, empower creatives, and grow an industry that could eventually compete on the global stage.
