Chairperson of the National Council, Lukas Muha, has called on Members of the Parliament to strengthen their role in promoting inclusive development and participatory democracy.

Muha remarked on this during the official opening of the induction and orientation seminar for members of the seventh National Council held at Swakopmund. 

Addressing regional councillors and lawmakers, Muha said Parliament remains a guardian of equity, ensuring that all Namibians benefit from the country's development - regardless of their region or background.

Muha emphasised that participatory democracy requires continuous engagement between lawmakers and citizens. 

He urged members of the National Council to listen to the concerns of the communities and ensure that their voices are reflected in national legislation and policy decisions.

"Parliamentary oversight is the cornerstone of accountable governance. It is through robust oversight that Parliament holds the Executive to account, safeguards public resources, and ensures that government policies and programmes are implemented in the best interests of the people. During the 6th National Council, we have witnessed Standing Committees conducting extensive oversight missions across all regions, investigating issues ranging from education and health to infrastructure, social welfare and security."

He further stressed the importance of parliamentary oversight in holding government accountable and safeguarding public resources.

Erongo Regional Governor, Nathalia |Goagoses emphasised the important role of the National Council to communities.

"The people have entrusted you with the sacred responsibility; your role in shaping law, scrutinising policies and representing diverse voices is central to the progress of our nation. As you embark on this journey, may you be guided by the principle of accountability, the principle of inclusivity and the principle of unity."
