The Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, said they are handling the flood situation affecting schools in the Zambezi Region.
Steenkamp was responding to concerns raised by IPC MP Abed Hishoono on the dangers of the floodwaters that could be crocodile-infested.
The Office of the Prime Minister dispatched a team to the Zambezi Region recently to assess the flood situation there, where learners are forced to cross through six-metre-deep rivers.
"It's very dangerous, and we are scared for their lives. Then we saw disturbing news on NBC of the school in Ohangwena, Shingunguma Primary School; we saw them walking in knee-deep water with the bags of maize on their heads, crossing the river, crossing oshonas, going to school," said Hishoono.
Dr. Steenkamp said the ministry is aware of the situation and that the Office of the Prime Minister is seized with the matter.
"Obviously, we must compensate the learners if they miss any of the 196 school days. I've spoken to the director in the Zambezi Region on Saturday, and they have even had meetings with parents. So I want to let you know that, yes, for us, it's equally serious. We agree that significant action is necessary, which is why the Prime Minister's office has dispatched a team alongside the local counterpart. The team lacks a foundational understanding of the context. Yes, we are aware, and we are handling the matter."
