The man who climbed onto the roof of Kavango Gateway Mall in Rundu this morning eventually carried out his threat to jump from the building.

He survived the fall.

Earlier, the man had fled from Rundu Police Station after his arrest on Tuesday.

Police officers pursued him through town until he ended up on the roof of Kavango Gateway Mall.

The man remained on the roof for about two hours. During that time, police contacted their stakeholders, and a shop across the street provided mattresses to cushion a potential landing.

NORED assisted with a vehicle equipped with an electrical scoop, and Telecom provided a ladder.

Negotiations took place between the reserve force and the man, but they were unsuccessful in convincing him to come down.

Police then resorted to sending members of the quick response unit to force the man off the roof.

The man jumped and landed on the mattresses.

He sustained slight injuries and was taken to Intermediate Hospital Rundu.

According to Rundu Police Station Commander Chief Inspector Hermien Muranda, the man was arrested at Bunya in the Kavango West Region on Tuesday on charges of assault by threat.
