The Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (NABTA) has announced its return to full operations following months of administrative challenges, unveiling a new digital system aimed at transforming the country's public transport sector.

In a media release, NABTA indicated that the Smart Taxi Association Platform (STAP) is designed to formalise the industry, improve passengers' safety and support taxi and bus operations.

Its secretary general, Pendapala Nakathingo, said the platform will introduce solutions to longstanding challenges affecting drivers, owners and passengers.

Among the key features is a proposed arrangement that would see active STAP-registered drivers on payment plans protected from arrest over outstanding traffic fines while negotiation continues with relevant authorities.

The system will also distinguish the driver-related and vehicle-related offences.

To address disorder at loading terminals, STAP will introduce a digital booking system allowing passengers to reserve seats and luggage space in advance.

NABTA says this will help eliminate harassment when boarding and other forms of misconduct experienced by commuters.

The platform will further require passenger registration on long-distance buses to improve emergency response and passenger identification in the event of accidents or fires.

NABTA also plans to introduce a nationwide taxi numbering system and an e-hailing service that will only accommodate verified and legally registered operators.

In support of recent calls by the minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, NABTA says STAP will assist members in complying with safety requirements, including the installation of automatic fire suppression technology in public transport vehicles.

The association also announced plans to provide registered members with funeral assistance, medical aid, life cover and group insurance, while exploring opportunities for housing and vehicle financing through banking partnerships.

NABTA says the platform will promote unity within the transport sector and create new business and employment opportunities as it rolls out nationwide.
