Zambia's government says it will not interfere with how, when and where the family of the late former President Edgar Lungu chooses to bury him.

In accepting the outcome of the South African Supreme Court of appeal judgement, Zambia's Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Tabo Kawana said the family can bury anywhere including Zambia.

Kawana described the family's stance as unfortunate, stressing that other presidents, including late Lungu's predecessor Micheal Sata, who died in a London hospital, are buried at Embassy Park in Lusaka.

The Permanent Secretary further reminded the media of the late President Levy Mwanawasa, who died in France, was also repatriated by the state and buried at Embassy Park against his explicit written will.

Meanwhile, church mother bodies, including the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia, have urged the Lungu family to reconsider their decision to bury the late Lungu in Zambia as opposed to South Africa.
