First Gentleman Epaphras Ndaitwah has called on the current and aspiring leaders to embrace strategic leadership and management.

He said effective leadership requires more than simply holding positions of authority.

Ndaitwah made the remarks during a public lecture on strategic leadership and management at the University of Namibia's Katima Mulilo Campus.

He cited that leadership and management are inseparable, with both playing a critical role in the success of institutions.

The first gentleman said leaders who fail to identify and address problems early often allow challenges to become deeply rooted within their organisations. 

"A leader must have the ability to look into the future. You must be future-orientated. Things of now will help you to understand how you have travelled, but you must be more focused on where to go. Don't look at the speed. You have been speeding; otherwise you might end up derailing."

He encouraged leaders to regularly assess the performance of their institutions and act decisively once weaknesses become evident.

UNAM's Katima Mulilo Campus Director, Samuel Mafwila, described the lecture as timely.

Professor Mafwila said the nation is navigating the complexities of the 21st century, adding communities, professionals and students require more than theoretical knowledge.

"To have these insights shared by someone who has commanded at the highest level of our national defence and now serves the nation in a unique diplomatic capacity is a rare and invaluable opportunity for us all."

The Associate Dean of the School of Military Science at UNAM, Brigadier General Mumba Mahela, delivered remarks on behalf of UNAM Vice-Chancellor Kenneth Matengu.

"Visionary leadership is essential for building resilient institutions, fostering innovation and driving sustainable development."

The public lecture forms part of a series that the First Gentleman is conducting across the country.
