UN General Assembly President Dr. Khalilur Rahman has credited Namibia and the African Group with supporting his successful bid to lead the 81st session of the General Assembly.

Rahman, a Bangladeshi diplomat, secured 99 votes against Cyprus' Andreas Kakouris, who received 91 votes, in the June 2026 election. 

During a courtesy visit by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Rahman shared views from his engagements with the African Group ahead of the vote and Namibia's support for his candidacy.

He said the African bloc's support was crucial to his election and Namibia's role and close cooperation between the two sides.
