The Rundu local authority has introduced prepaid water meters to eliminate the conventional ways of collecting water charges from the residents.

The council has run up debts of millions of dollars and is in arrears with NamWater because residents do not honour their post-paid water debts.

The Governor of the Kavango East Region, Julius Hambyuka, launched the project on Wednesday in Rundu.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Rundu Town Council, Fransiska Kupembona, indicated that the N$6.9 million prepaid water system project will not fail, as other towns are using the same system and it's working perfectly.

Kupembona further stressed that the Council will be lenient to those with outstanding water debts, provided they make payment arrangements.
