A Lusaka magistrate has sentenced Zambian content creator Elias Musyani to six months in prison and fined him K70,000 (around N$50,000) for cyberbullying musician Yo Maps’ wife, Kidist Kifle.

This is the first case of its kind in Zambia, where a court has ruled on online bullying.

Magistrate Mutinta Mwenya declared that the courts will no longer tolerate online harassment and issued a warning about the responsible use of social media freedoms.

The court found Elias guilty of threatening to rape the musician's wife and harm her family through Facebook posts and videos.

Despite his lawyers' requesting a lighter sentence and claiming he was a student, the court found inconsistencies in the evidence.

Elias chose to remain silent during his defence and was led to prison as his family broke down in tears.
