Epukiro's Eiseb Community Against Stock Theft Organisation-CASO has petitioned against the granting of bail to the suspects implicated in multiple reported cases of stock theft.
The suspects are Synanus Karukukutu Katjiutua, Paul Gun-Gun Tjiposa, Mbeurora Tjomuho, Travold Tjandero and Mosupi Udigeng.
The petition reads that the abovementioned suspects were arrested in November 2023 on suspicion of transporting stolen cattle from Otjombinde and Otjinene in the Omaheke Region.
According to the group, the accused have a habit of committing the same offence on any given opportunity presented to them, including violating bail conditions.
Furthermore, CASO states that it has evidence that points to the fact that since the incarceration of the mentioned suspects in 2023, the cases of stock theft within their jurisdiction have drastically reduced, and the community can now breathe a sigh of relief.
Therefore, they appeal to the court to act in defence of the public interest by sending a clarion call to the offenders that crime is not profitable.
Upon receiving the petition, the State Prosecutor, Faith Nyaungwa, accepted the community's concern and reminded them that the offenders are undergoing their trial period.
The accused are still in custody while their case is under legal proceedings.
