The Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN) has launched several strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening member engagement and promoting sustainable socioeconomic development.

The union recently held a Western Regional Roundtable discussion in the Erongo Region as part of member engagement forums.

The roundtable event formed part of a broader effort to enable closer interaction between the union's leadership and its members across all regions, designed to inform, empower, and engage members about the benefits of union affiliation.

It further provided critical updates on current campaigns and national labour matters.

Acting President of MUN, Poco-Key Mberiuana, emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating, “Each one, teach one. It’s our order of the day today. I’m very excited to stand here on our first approach of its kind on how we are going to map the way forward.”

Western Regional Chairperson Niklaas Afrikaner highlighted the union’s essential role in protecting workers’ rights amid industry growth, noting, “Our members are going to grow in other industries and sectors too. Yet far too often, the conditions under which they work remain uncertain, underprotected, and invisible to decision-making. This is why the role of the union is not only relevant but essential in today’s world.”

The Union has funded current and former members' small and medium enterprises with N$800,000 through its NAMIT SME Fund since 2024.

The fund supports entrepreneurial ventures for current and former members in various regions, demonstrating tangible support for members' economic empowerment.

The union has thus far received 54 applications.

Member Theopolina Fanuel expressed appreciation for the roundtable event, saying, “We learnt a lot, and I really appreciate it. The questions posed to the leaders were answered as they should be. Hearing from MUN members, new members, and ex-members was encouraging.”

The Union further announced the launch of its National Games, scheduled to take place next year.

They recognise the importance of the well-being, social cohesion, and work-life balance of its members.
