Some taxi drivers held a protest at the Ministry of Works and Transport premises, demanding that e-hailing services like Yango, LEFA, and Indrive, among others, follow the same rules as taxi drivers in the capital.

The taxi drivers claimed that the mentioned services are taking away their customers due to their lower fares than the normal taxi prices.

They also allege that some drivers do not possess operating permits.

The taxi drivers also raised concerns about the long waiting period of six months for a permit application.

Responding to the petitioners, Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi promised to look into their concerns and find a viable solution.

"Be assured this issue is receiving my utmost attention with my team and their police officers, and the traffic. They are not as alert insofar as these issues are concerned. Please be assured. And I just want to tell you now that when you are not here, the first week of October, I told you I would give them the 30th of September. On the 30th, the first week of September or October, I will inform you of compliance or noncompliance. If there is no compliance, I will contact you once the due date has passed. I won't keep you in the dark. I will report back to you."
