A resident of Katwitwi in the Kavango West Region, Abraham Mungowa has turned to innovation to address his community's day-to-day needs.
Using recycled materials, he designed a grain thresher machine that can thresh both mahangu and sorghum from their stalks.
With this vision in mind, Mungowa began assembling discarded materials in May of this year to fulfil his dream of making the task of threshing crops more efficient for local farmers.
He explained that he saw an opportunity as numerous households experienced a good harvest of mahangu, providing a chance to test his creation.
The machine has a small motor powered by electricity, which rotates round bars inside the drum to separate grain from stalks. Mungowa added that the machine can also operate using a fuel-powered motor.
The high-spirited Mungowa said his knowledge and skills were not acquired through formal training or education but were God-given, complemented by skills he gained from informal jobs in the past.
His wish is to enhance his knowledge and skills through vocational training in mechanical engineering; however, this remains a distant dream, as he does not have the funds to pursue it.
Mungowa is also calling on the government or any Good Samaritans to support his work through funding or the supply of materials. He said this support would enable him to produce more machines and expand the project.
While he is attending to minor final touches on the machine, he says his fellow community members are eagerly waiting to start using his services.
Mungowa has also assembled a machine that he uses to draw water from the river.
