The Chinese Embassy has marked the 80th anniversary of the 'victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.'

The event coincided with the 98th Anniversary of China's People's Liberation Army.

During the Sino-Japanese War in the early 1900s, China suffered over 20 million casualties in its war against Japan, including civilians.

It is regarded as among the most deadly wars in Asia.

Despite being militarily weaker, the Chinese refused to surrender, eventually achieving victory with support from Western allies.

China's Ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, said, "Today, as we commemorate this great victory, our purpose is to bear history in mind, honour all those who gave their lives, cherish peace, and open up the future. We do so not to perpetuate hatred, but to draw lessons from history that prevent the recurrence of past tragedies and to inspire people's union for peace. Over the past 80 years, in the mysticism of the national landscape, peace and development have always been the themes of the times, the wide aspiration of the world's people, and the noble goals of human society."

Zhao stated that, since that conflict some 98 years ago, the Chinese People's Liberation Army remains a civilised force for peace and justice.

The Deputy Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Charles Mubita, commended China for its advanced military.

Dr. Mubita also expressed appreciation to the People's Republic of China for continuously contributing to the development in African countries.

"The People's Republic of China brought in a few hundred Chinese contractors to Tanzania to build a railway line from Dharaslang to Lusada. And it was completed in record time so that Zambia, Malawi, and Botswana could get their trade goods from Dharaslang through that lonely line. We also used to receive our arms and ammunition through Dharaslang. So that is China for you."

He added that the ties that bind Namibia and China's friendship cannot be broken, and with support from the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Namibia will be capable of modernising its army with technologically infused weapons.
