The Cuban Embassy in Namibia marked what would have been Fidel Castro's 99th birthday with a tribute and celebrated his role in Namibia's path to independence.

At the celebration, speakers highlighted the brotherly bond between Fidel Castro and Namibia's late Founding President Sam Nujoma, rooted in their shared struggle against colonialism and apartheid. 

Their friendship evolved into a strong political alliance, with Cuba under Castro playing a key role in supporting Namibia's liberation struggle and promoting unity and peace in Africa.

Cuban Chargé d'Affaires to Namibia, Rodolfo Guzman, announced the launch of Fidel Castro's 100th anniversary commemoration, which will run until November next year.

The tribute will include a series of events honouring Castro's legacy and revolutionary ideals.

Castro's commitment went beyond military support. 

After independence, he ensured Namibia would benefit from Cuban doctors, teachers, and other professionals.

Moreover, Cuba educated Namibian children, many of whom were survivors of the Cassinga massacre, and they returned home to become influential figures in Namibia's economy and government.

Over the years, Namibia and Cuba have expanded and strengthened cooperation in education, health, biotechnology, and parliamentary diplomacy.
