The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has raised concern over the low turnout of eligible voters during the first week of the Supplementary Registration of Voters.

In a media statement, the Commission registered more than 1,000 eligible voters in 121 constituencies plus 59 local authorities across the country.

Although the numbers are low, ECN's Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer, Peter Shaama, thanked those who registered and urged the ones who missed the chance to register last year to seize this opportunity.

In addition, 12,270 voters moved from one constituency to another, and close to 5,000 voters applied for duplicates of lost voters' cards.

Erongo Region reported a 2,453 average voter turnout, with Swakopmund Constituency leading nationwide in voter registration applications.

In an interview with NBC News, Corporate Communication Manager at ECN, De Wet Siluka, expressed concern and encouraged the nation to register before the due date.

"The Commission noted with great concern the low turnout recorded. We wish to urge eligible voters, particularly those who reside in the local authorities, to turn out in numbers and register before the end of the supplementary registration of voters period, which is 19 August 2025, as there will be no supplementary registration of voters again after the close of this exercise."

The Commission urges all eligible voters to apply for registration in the constituency and local authority where they have been residing for a consecutive period of 12 months.

The SRV exercise is expected to conclude on 19 August 2025.
