Political leaders have expressed condolences and called for urgent action following the fatal road accident near Mariental.

The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) and the Landless People's Movement (LPM) issued separate statements, both urging the government to address the recurring problem of unsafe transport and rising road fatalities.

The IPC Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Imms Nashinge, said the tragedy spoke to the risks faced by uniformed officers in transit and questioned the safety of vehicles used to transport personnel. 

He called on the government to prioritise the welfare of public servants while in service and in transit. 

LPM leader Bernadus Swartbooi described the accident as part of a wider national crisis of road deaths. 

Citing Road Safety Council figures, he noted that Namibia had already recorded more than 100 fatalities, 300 serious injuries, and 3,000 crashes this year, with projections of further increases. 

Swartbooi said the statistics reflected families and communities in mourning, not just numbers.

Both Swartbooi and Nashinge urged national unity in grief and called for collective action to improve road infrastructure, strengthen safety measures, and ensure accountability. 

An official investigation into the cause of the Mariental accident is ongoing.
