The Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, has revealed in his ministerial statement in the National Assembly that the government has auctioned off 306 vehicles, generating about N$24 million that will be directed towards government programmes and services.

Nekundi stated that the government acquired a significant portion of its fleet before 2014, far exceeding its operational period.

The government has identified 1,500 vehicles that have clocked beyond the permissible 120 thousand kilometres and five-year lifespan, with the parameters scientifically determined to the highest standard of safety.

"I must emphasise to this distinguished House that our aged fleet poses increasingly serious safety risks to the dedicated public servants who operate these vehicles daily, as well as to the passengers they transport in service of our nation. These safety concerns cannot be understated, as they directly impact the welfare of our civil servants and the communities they serve."

According to Nekundi, an additional 306 vehicles had already reached their mechanical lifespan and were auctioned off between the 16th of June and the 3rd of September. 40 public auctions were conducted nationwide.

"The results of the 40 public auctions that were conducted during the period stated, countrywide, have exceeded our initial projections and validated the soundness of our strategic approach. This significant financial recovery of N$24 million plus not only demonstrates the economic wisdom of our disposal strategy but also provides additional resources that can be redirected toward priority government programmes and services."

Nekundi further stated that the auctions have exceeded their projections, validating the effectiveness of the ministry's approach.
