Police in the Otjozondjupa Region are cautioning the public to remain vigilant against scammers who are currently targeting farmers, business people, and community members in Grootfontein.
During August and September, several individuals in the Grootfontein area fell victim to scams carried out by suspects who were impersonating police officers and bank employees and using different cellphone numbers to deceive their targets.
These fraudsters specifically target people who have registered cases with the Namibian Police, as well as members of the business and farming community, instructing them to perform cellphone transactions that result in victims losing large sums of money.
In one case, on Saturday, 16 August 2025, a scammer impersonated an Inspector Hausiku and contacted a victim, falsely claiming that the victim’s mobile number had been linked to a murder case. The scammer then instructed the victim to make transactions via his cellphone to clear his name.
Shortly afterwards, more than N$155,000 was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account.
The police have emphasised that it does not involve third parties in investigations, and such calls are the work of criminals.
They are urging the public to ignore any suspicious telephone instructions, as these are scams designed to steal money.
Members of the public are further advised not to respond to unknown numbers, since scammers are operating with multiple SIM cards.
Meanwhile, the Grootfontein Agricultural Show is set to take place from 17 to 19 September 2025, and both farmers and businesspeople are advised to be extra cautious during this period to avoid falling prey to such scams.
For any suspicious calls or activities, community members are encouraged to immediately contact the Grootfontein Police Station at 067 242111 or visit the Namibian Police stall at the Grootfontein Showgrounds during this year’s Agricultural Show.
