The Rehoboth Town Council has named a street in Block E after Loskey ǁGaroëb, one of the town's first regional councillors.

ǁGaroëb, who became the first regional councillor of Rehoboth in 1992, served the Hardap Regional Council until 1998 and later represented the region in the National Council.

Before independence, he also served the Rehoboth community under the late Kaptein Hans Diergaardt.

Rehoboth mayor Justin Coetzee said the gesture was a reminder of the importance of unity, celebration and recognition for those who contributed to the town's growth.

"This is not a party thing; we are not going to do party politics. We are leaders. And leaders, when we all come together, forget about parties, and whose party, and what party, Because we grew up together in one house drinking tea before we even started the parties."

In his acceptance speech, ǁGaroëb thanked the council and residents for the honour, saying the recognition belonged to the entire community that worked together during difficult times.

"I'm very happy, I'm so glad, I'm speechless, but I'm very proud that I can have a street name, and I appreciate what the Town Council does for me because of my legacy and the mark that I make in Rehoboth. So thank you very much, Town Council of Rehoboth, for the honour that you give me, and I hope that my children and all my children's children, the legacy of Loski ǁGaroëb, will remain. I thank you very much."
