Counting ballots is underway in Malawi following the general elections that took place on Tuesday.

Malawi's electoral body chairperson, Annabel Mtalikanja, announced that all polling stations closed at 20:00 last night and counting is underway at polling stations across the country.

The voting process countrywide was incident-free, save for an isolated case of fire and whirlwind at two separate polling stations.

The situation was, however, brought under control, and voting proceeded without further issues.

Counting at polling stations is underway, and results will be transmitted to the tallying centres after verification.

The Malawi Electoral Commission has allowed the media to share the outcome at polling stations, provided that they are verified before posting.

The official results will only be announced by the electoral commission after verification at the totalling centres.

Malawians are electing a President, members of parliament and councillors in this tripartite election.
