NUDO MP Vetaruhe Kandorozu has accused the Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, of nepotism in the appointment of the Engineering Council of Namibia, questioning his authority to make such decisions.
"We want to know when you advertised the opportunity for the public to apply." Which law or instrument gives you the power to appoint your friends and your village neighbours?"
Nekundi explained that the process was carried out within the legal framework.
"The Engineering Council of Namibia is not a classified institution under the PECA. Only the PECA and the institutions classified under it, along with the relevant processes, are applicable. In terms of the Engineering Council Act, the members are appointed in terms of that section with Section 3, Subsection 1. And in that section, it indicates who the members to be appointed are. And those members must be nominated by specified institutions that are specified in the Act."
The minister said that on the 7th of July, he had written a letter to all the institutions that are required to nominate a potential council member.
"They have started to submit the nominations of the members they wish to nominate. It was based on those who were nominated, and the minister then formally appointed them. So the law was exactly followed, and the minister had a complaint about that provision of the law."
