After two years of abandonment, the Keetmanshoop public swimming pool is about to reopen.
The town's mayor, Annelize Knaus, announced this in an interview with NBC News.
Mayor Knaus explained that the swimming pool, one of the oldest recreational facilities in the region, was forced to close two years ago due to years of wear and tear.
"During the closing period, the facility underwent essential maintenance and renovation. This included the procurement of a few materials and repairs to ensure the pool remained safe, functional, and enjoyable for all users, as well as for the community. We prioritise proper maintenance rather than temporary fixes so that the pool can continue to serve the public for years to come."
Mayor Knaus highlighted the importance of the swimming pool's maintenance to prevent prolonged closures in the future.
"The facility has been significantly upgraded to improve the overall experience of our community. Additional seats have been installed to allow families, friends, and spectators to enjoy the environment more comfortably. We have also ensured that the tuck shop will be operational, so swimmers and visitors can access snacks and refreshments while enjoying their time at the pool. These improvements make the facility more user-friendly, family-oriented and aligned with modern community needs."
Knaus did not reveal how much the council invested in the swimming pool's rehabilitation, only saying it is an in-house project which is still ongoing.
The council plans to reopen the pool during the first week of next month.
