Members of the banned United Democratic Party (UDP) held a demonstration in Katima Mulilo on Thursday and handed over a petition to Zambezi Governor Dorothy Kabula.

The members continue to demand the secession of the Zambezi Region from the rest of Namibia. They appealed to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to address the matter urgently.

They also demanded the unconditional release of the "Caprivi political prisoners in Namibian prisons" with immediate effect.

They gave the President five days to respond to their petition.

The UDP was banned in Namibia in September 2006 after its attempt to secede the then Caprivi Region from the rest of the country.

Governor Kabula, while receiving the petition, reminded the demonstrators that Namibia is an independent state and assured them she would forward the petition to the Office of the President.
