Freelance sign language interpreter for the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Peter Mbwale, died in a road accident on Wednesday evening along the C35 road between Werda and Omakange.
His death was confirmed by NamPol Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga, who said the crash occurred around 19:35 near Oviyombo village.
According to police reports, Mbwale was driving from Windhoek to Ruacana when he hit a cow crossing the road, lost control of the vehicle, and collided head-on with an oncoming car belonging to the Kamanjab Constituency Council.
Mbwale died on the spot, while his wife was critically injured and is receiving treatment at Opuwo State Hospital.
There were ten occupants in Mbwale's vehicle. Several sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
The two occupants of the government vehicle, a male driver and a female passenger, were also seriously injured.
Mbwale’s body was taken to the Opuwo police mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Police say investigations into the crash are ongoing.
