China has delivered its second batch of rice donations to the government, worth N$76.5 million, to support the 2024/25 drought relief programme.

The first batch of 27,200 bags of rice was delivered in February, earmarked for Oshikoto.

The donation, delivered in two batches, includes 3,780 metric tonnes of rice.

The government says the support comes at a critical time as Namibia faces its worst drought in recent years.

Executive Director Gladice Pickering spoke on behalf of Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare.

"I must acknowledge that this humanitarian intervention from the People's Republic of China came timely and handy, as it complements our efforts to mitigate the effects of the devastating drought on the affected communities."

Despite the good rains received last year, prolonged dry spells have led to livestock losses, poor harvests and weakened livelihoods in most parts of the country.

"I express our profound appreciation to the people and the government of the People's Republic of China for the emergency food donation. These food items made a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of Namibians. Let us continue fostering our cooperation that not only uplifts," said Pickering.

The government says China's contribution will help fill the funding gap in its drought response efforts and provide immediate relief to vulnerable households hardest hit by the crisis.
