The ǂAo-Daman Traditional Authority has unanimously resolved to nominate Senior Councillor Christofine Classen as the substantive Chief, following the death of the late Gaob Petrus Ukongo.
Classen has been serving as Acting Gaob of the ǂAo-Daman Traditional Authority since June 2024, when Ukongo died.
During a meeting of all members of the traditional authority, it was agreed that Classen assume the position permanently.
No second candidate was nominated, and the decision was taken without any objection.
The decision follows the recommendation by the Elders Council, which expressed full support for Classen's confirmation.
"There is no opposition, and we, as the Traditional Authority, are confirming Christofine Classen to that position," said Senior Councillor Harry Haradoeb.
Haradoeb confirmed that the process followed customary law and reflected the collective will of both the Traditional Authority and the Elders Council.
In a message read on his behalf, Kunene Regional Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua said the matter will be attended to in January in accordance with the relevant procedures.
"What you have brought to the attention of the Office of the Governor and to the government of the Republic of Namibia is enjoying its maximum attention. The application is well-received. It's been dealt with, and therefore, the finalisation of the gazette for her to be recognised by the government and to take over is at the final stage."
The governor also welcomed the unity shown by the ǂAo-Daman Traditional Authority and reaffirmed the government's commitment to working closely with traditional leaders.
