The Police in the Otjozondjupa Region on Thursday marked the 16th anniversary of the Women’s Network, celebrating the achievements and increasing leadership roles of female officers within the force.

The event brought together women from various government ministries and police units to reflect on the progress made in advancing women in policing.

Speaking at the event, Otjozondjupa Crime Investigations Coordinator and National Women's Network Executive Committee member, Deputy Commissioner Edna Nawa said the anniversary represents growth, strength and the remarkable contribution of women within the police force.

"It is with great honour to stand before you today as we celebrate 16 years of the Women's Network in the Namibian Police Force. This milestone reflects growth, strength and the remarkable contribution of women in the region as well as in the Namibian Police Force."

Nawa revealed that the Otjozondjupa Region currently has 414 female police officers, including 20 newly appointed female constables who were welcomed into the Women's Network during the celebration.

She said during the 2024/2025 financial year, 160 women were promoted from the rank of sergeant to senior inspector, demonstrating the increasing recognition of women's leadership and professionalism in the police force.

Otjozondjupa Regional Commander, Commissioner Philip Hidengwa praised the progress made by female officers, saying their achievements demonstrate how women continue to break barriers and strengthen policing in the region, and encouraged women to embrace change.

"We also appreciate the government for taking up the initiative of recognising women to come into certain positions. But I am telling you that we still have a lot to do. When you have members who are working at certain units, when you are told, "We want members in serious crime." "No, no, no, no. I cannot work there. "Where do you want to work? The world has changed."

The region's social worker Ndinelao Joseph also highlighted the resilience of women in the police force, noting that female officers continue to serve with dedication despite the demanding nature of their work.

"This is not just a celebration of years but a celebration of courage, growth, unity and success. 16 years of standing together, 16 years of empowering women and 16 years of proving that women are powerful agents of change."
