Namibian students in Zambia have raised concerns over the high study permit fees they are required to pay to pursue their education in the country.

They have since called for authorities in the two sister countries to consider either reducing or completely scrapping them like they have done to the travel visas.

They turned up in relatively large numbers, considering the short notice period since the idea was conceived by the mission in Zambia.

These form part of a large population of Namibians currently studying in various tertiary institutions in Zambia.

For most of them, they are not here by choice but by circumstances currently prevailing back home.

Monica Povanhu, Namibian student in Zambia, said, "I applied at UNAM, but I was unsuccessful. I really wanted to pursue my dream, so I applied at Cavendish, and I was accepted."

Edwardo Phillipe, a Namibian student in Zambia, added that "At UNAM, there are limited spaces. A friend of mine was already studying here, and now here I am."

The "Namibian students in Zambia meet and greet" event is the inaugural engagement by the newly appointed Namibian High Commissioner to Zambia, Goms Menette.

It is also aimed at taking inventory of Namibians currently studying in Zambia, who are estimated to be over five hundred.
