Following recent oil discoveries, Namibia continues to seek guidance from countries with established petroleum industries, such as Norway, to gain experience in managing the sector effectively.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah met with a delegation from the Royal Norwegian Embassy based in South Africa, where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the oil and gas industry and sharing expertise that could help Namibia develop its sector.
Norway is regarded as a global model for responsible oil and gas management, having built a strong regulatory system and a sovereign wealth fund that invests petroleum revenues for long-term national benefit.
Since Namibia's major oil discoveries, leaders have emphasised experienced countries' models to avoid the resource curse and channel revenues into growth and development.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Namibia and Norway, expressing interest in strengthening cooperation in broader energy sector development.
"And I'm very happy that the Prime Minister has to send you here in response to our request. We really appreciate it. We know that we have a very long history with Norway, particularly in the energy sector. And we believe we can continue at all levels as we are moving with our developmental programmes. So you are welcome. Then I'm happy. No, really, what I want is for us to see how best we can manage this oil and gas that is discovered in our territory. So, you gain from your experience."
"We have organised very good meetings with us. We had meetings earlier today. Very informative meeting. No, that's good. So, we are very happy with the reception so far. And the expert I have brought with me, I have the impression she is also happy," expressed Counsellor in the Norwegian Embassy, Ørnulf Strøm.
Namibia has emerged as one of the world's most promising new oil frontiers after major offshore discoveries, with the government aiming to transition from exploration to production while ensuring transparency, local participation and job creation.
