Community development is gradually progressing at the Kalkfeld settlement, thanks to the efforts of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council, which has established a community bakery run by local residents.

The Regional Council's Chairperson, Paulus Nekundi, said the initiative is part of the agenda to help revive economic activities in the area.

According to Nekundi, the council has revamped an old building and furnished it with bakery machinery.

"My predecessor had already initiated this programme. I decided that since we are one government, I will focus on continuing existing projects. Therefore, we must ensure the completion of projects that received government funding. Therefore, we are committed to ensuring that the bakery is fully operational, as we have already mentioned – at the end of last year, we purchased machinery."

Although operations are managed by four to five people, Nekundi said the council is looking into transport for deliveries and electricity.

"So far, they still face challenges, especially transportation, for them to be able to deliver their orders; those are some of the challenges, and the challenge is also electricity—when there is no electricity, or it trips, then that means there are no operations."

Nekundi added that the council will soon engage the Directorate of Education for the possible supply of bread to schools.
