The National Assembly has conveyed its condolences following the death of its member, James Uerikua.
Uerikua is remembered for his service in legislative work and his contributions to the country.
Some Members of Parliament are still in disbelief over the death of 43-year-old Uerikua.
All that remains is to comfort one another as they remember the young and vibrant man, whose voice echoed through the lower house.
They say his relationship with fellow parliamentarians had no boundaries, regardless of political affiliation.
Secretary to the National Assembly, Esther Kaapanda, said, "Honourable Uerikua was really someone who demonstrated inter-parliamentary unity between different political parties, and he was committed to the common vision of really building a better society for every Namibian. He interacted with every member of parliament, irrespective of which political party you belong to, which means, as I have indicated, he was a bridge of peace.”
Leader of the National Democratic Party, Martin Lukato, expressed his condolences to Uerikua's family members, including his children, relatives, friends, and the country at large.
The National Assembly also extended its condolences to the family as they mourn the death of Uerikua's son, who died in the same vehicle accident.
The House wished a speedy recovery to other family members who were injured in the crash.
Members of Parliament also visited the family of the late Uerikua.
There, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, described Uerikua as a towering political figure who dedicated his life to serving the public to the best of his ability.
She said Uerikua was exemplary to all.
"Honourable Uerikua was a towering political figure in spite of his youthful age, a reference for generations, someone who embodied the values of loyalty, faith, modesty, and passion. His was a lifetime of committed service and humble devotion.”
Leader of the Popular Democratic Movement, McHenry Venaani, said, “We just don't want to be quiet as if we do not know what we have lost. It's a national loss to our country. Speaker, thank you for coming to mourn on our behalf on the first day. Parliament will never be the same.”
The Secretariat has stated that they will communicate the arrangements for a memorial service at the National Assembly after concluding consultations with the family.
