A total of 166 learners from Muzii Combined School, accompanied by 14 staff members, arrived at Luhonono via the Kapelwa Kabajani Ferry on Sunday before proceeding to Lusese, where they will be temporarily accommodated and continue with their schooling.
Meanwhile, 37 of the 45 learners initially listed for relocation by their parents from Mpukano Junior Primary School are being transported to Lusese today. The school has a total enrolment of 85 learners.
Learners from both schools are being accompanied by a group of parents, who will take care of them during their stay away from home.
At the same time, community members at Mpukano are awaiting relocation to higher ground by the regional council after their homes were submerged by floodwaters. Some residents, including those from Nankutwe, had earlier refused relocation, saying they preferred government assistance in the form of food and other essentials. Others cited concerns about leaving their homes and belongings unguarded.
