The government will soon introduce a policy that will prohibit municipalities from selling serviced land to private developers but individuals who can afford to build their houses.

During President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's State of the Nation Address yesterday, Nudo Leader Vetaruhe Kandorozu raised concerns regarding the social wellbeing of citizens, citing lack of affordable land and housing.

"Our plots and housing are very, very expensive in Namibia. And we are talking about housing providing better housing."

The President in her response, acknowledged that the government needs to establish an institution that can fund those who wish to construct their homes.

She further stated that the government has identified an alternative cost-effective building material available in South Africa.

She said land has been identified in Otjiwarongo where a factory is to be constructed to further reduce the price.

Meanwhile, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said the government is planning to invest in projects aimed at generating electricity to lessen the financial burden on end users.

This was after Republican Party leader Mbundu Mathias questioned what the government is doing to reduce escalating prices.

"Will the electricity costs continue to cripple households and businesses? Will the administration commit to immediate regulation to reduce tariffs, and what is the exact timeline for measurable relief?"

The President stated that the projects should be carried out in a careful manner, particularly when working with the private sector, which is often profit-driven.

She explained there are various factors that affect prices which are beyond government influence.

"Electricity, which is also driven by other commodities, for example, oil. We know that once oil goes up, everything in the world goes up because almost everything runs on oil. So these are the challenges that we are facing in the global economy, and they are things that are completely beyond our control."
