The Landless Peoples Movement (LPM) has proposed a two-year, thorough joint scientific research project by the government and private sector into Namibia's ocean biomass.

This is to allow proper policy planning and intervention for an industry that has the potential to create more jobs.

Speaking at a media briefing, LPM leader Bernadus Swartbooi said the party has identified a growing mistrust between scientists from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform and those in the fishing sector, particularly after the state reported a decline in fish stocks while the private sector pointed to stability.

He adds that further disagreements persist over the status of the sardine population.

The proposal, he says, seeks to bridge this gap and promote sustainable, science-based and profitable fishing practices.

He adds that the sector has the potential to create 10,000 extra jobs if well managed.

"What we have done is to have significant discussions with everybody, because as a political party representative in parliament, our interest is to make sure that every sector can be assisted through the appropriate policies to create additional opportunities for our young people. That sector deserves the necessary attention and the necessary input," said Swartbooi.

The leader further stressed the importance of controlled seal harvesting to help restore marine biomass balance, while also highlighting its potential to create jobs within the sector.

Swartbooi further emphasised the necessity of monitoring the sea to prevent illegal fishing vessels, a significant concern that needs addressing.

"But drone technology can be of good use from a land-based position. You don't need to use boats every day to go there. You can first study them on drone-based technology. Somewhere near the ocean sites, there is a place that we've been told can be used."

The party said it would engage the Office of the President, the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform to present its proposals.
