Vice President Lucia Witbooi called on Lüderitz councillors and community members to collectively address challenges facing the local disability centre during her visit.
Established in 2022 by mothers with assistance from the constituency office to cater to children with disabilities, the centre faces challenges such as lack of appropriate educational equipment, safe transportation for children, proper educational toys, and incentives for volunteers.
Caretaker Anschua Martin highlighted the difficulties:
“We don't receive any salary. I am walking from my house to here, no taxi money, just because we wanted to create this centre for our kids. Because if we as mothers cannot stand up, who will stand up for our kids? We would like to ask if possible if we can get a monthly allowance for us.”
The Vice President also visited the Lüderitz Early Childhood Development Centre, which she inaugurated in 2017. The ECD faces its own challenges, including lack of feeding programmes and an unsafe environment.
Witbooi encouraged the educators:
“Together with you, together with the parents, together with the community we will attend to the concern. Therefore, I am encouraging our educators under your leadership to continue nurturing them, guiding them and supporting the children.”
