The recently concluded 9th Rehoboth Expo has been hailed as a significant success. In 2017, the expo showcased 17 head of elite stock; now, nearly a decade later, it has expanded to feature over 400 small stock.
The event, known for celebrating excellence in breeding, saw two young breeders from Rehoboth announce themselves in the farming community, proving that young people can excel in the agriculture sector.
Farmer Wayne Nell of Hissop Farming shared his journey with NBC News, saying, "I have been in the farming industry for about four years, but I have been breeding Van Rooy sheep for a year and a half. While it is hard work, we are seeing the fruit of our labour. It's a process that does not happen overnight."
He added that farming is not an easy process: "It takes commitment, but I think the advantage we have is that we get a lot of support from the older farmers. Getting their advice, with their knowledge and wisdom, makes the path easier."
Another participant at the expo was Riveno Alberts, who farms at Auchab Farming, who said, "We have been breeding Van Rooy and a bit of Meat Masters for the last 15 years. This is a great platform where we can show our genetics and inspire other young breeders."
