Vice President Lucia Witbooi has called on Namibia's faith communities to play a central role in national renewal as well as the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN) to strengthen Christian unity, prophetic witness and institutional renewal.

Speaking at the CCN's Annual General Meeting, Witbooi invoked Psalm 127 to stress that lasting institutions and flourishing communities require a foundation of faith and integrity.

She said churches, as trusted social institutions, are uniquely positioned to support national development, social cohesion and ethical leadership.

Acknowledging Namibia's progress in consolidating democracy and peace, Witbooi warned that pressing problems, including unemployment, poverty, inequality, food insecurity and limited economic opportunity, persist and require a whole-of-society response.

She urged the CCN to use its moral authority to identify societal challenges, inspire hope, defend human dignity and promote good governance and accountability.

"Moreover, unity among churches strengthens not only the collective Christian witness but also enhances the capacity of faith communities to contribute meaningfully to national development, social cohesion, and moral renewal."

Witbooi pointed out the long partnership between government and faith groups, praising churches for contributions in education, healthcare, humanitarian assistance and community development.

"Allow me to emphasise the call to the church and religious institutions to partner with government to combat moral decay, corruption, substance abuse, and gender-based violence in our society, among other evils. We appeal to the church, as a voice of hope, to assist by teaching lessons on good behaviour and sound family values."

The meeting will, among others present, discuss and approve the audited financial statements and auditors' reports for the 2016-2026 financial years.
